Patagonia 2010DSCN0247copy

For years I have explored and fly-fished the Andean frontier of Patagonia as a traveler, guide, outfitter, and television host. In my experience, Chile & Argentina both offer memorable and outstanding travel/fishing opportunities, but like most experiences in life, many fly-fishing trips offer the good and bad: good fishing, bad lodge; good lodge, bad guide; good guide, bad itinerary…you understand.

During my last extended visit to Argentina, I worked and fished on an upcoming film, The One, a fly-fishing documentary created by Gray Ghost Productions. We also were creating a promotional video to showcase our trip! Our objective: work with the best guides, fish for the biggest brown trout, and sample unique and local food and wine to capture the splendor that is Patagonia Argentina. The best outfitter in the Neuquen Region hosted our production team; naturally, we fished the historic and remote private waters, visited the finest lodges, and ate and drank the best local food and wine available. They rolled out the red carpet, and we fished, lived, and dreamed in heaven!

I met many important members of the professional Argentine fishing community, and I began to imagine a larger picture: a customized itinerary designed for the traveling angler: a platinum package! I envisioned a trip where my guest is offered to fish all the best water in the region, like we had, and experience the great diversity that lies within this huge valley of trout-filled rivers, beautiful people, and delicious and healthy food. With my affinity for drift fishing, we would comfortably hit all the best river sections, while always returning to the idyllic comfort of the best & local lodge at Spring Creek. This lodge offers a private upscale layout of spacious private cabanas and a main restaurant & bar positioned meticulously within the braided channels of it’s own trophy spring creek (yes, with 10 pound trout off your front porch, no joke!).

The Neuquen Region of Argentina is immediately south of the wine region of Mendoza, which boasts the popular & recently popularized Malbec variety. A 2 hour flight south of Buenos Aires, this landscape is quintessential Andes, with towering mountains, a comfortable and predictable climate, and an open fertile valley lush with willow-lined rivers and snow capped volcanoes; a perfect fishing vacation to escape the North American winter for a bit.
